Northern Ireland amends Renewables Obligation for Anaerobic Digestion Print E-mail


The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation
 (NIRO) has been ammended under The Renewables Obligation Amendment Order Northern Ireland 2011 and implements a number of changes to the NIRO from 1 April 2011.

The NIRO is the main support scheme for renewable electricity projects in the Northern Ireland. The latest changes include increasing the support currently offered for electricity generated from anaerobic digestion, introducing higher Renewable Obligation Certificate levels for generators adding additional generating capacity and the introduction of mandatory sustainablility criteria for Biomass and Bioliquids sustainability reporting to meet the EU Renewable Energy Directive.

Under the amendements anaerobic digestion, under 500kW capacity, receives 4 ROCs per MWh and anaerobic digestion, over 500kW capacity, receives 3 ROCs per MWh.
