The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation (NIRO) has been amended under The Renewables Obligation Amendment Order Northern Ireland 2011 and implements a number of changes to the NIRO from 1 April 2011.
The NIRO is the main support scheme for renewable electricity projects in the Northern Ireland. The latest changes include increasing the support currently offered for electricity generated from anaerobic digestion, introducing higher Renewable Obligation Certificate levels for generators adding additional generating capacity and the introduction of mandatory sustainability criteria for Biomass and Bioliquids sustainability reporting to meet the EU Renewable Energy Directive.
Under the amendments anaerobic digestion, under 500kW capacity, receives 4 ROCs per MWh and anaerobic digestion, over 500kW capacity, receives 3 ROCs per MWh.
